Transcript

Bruno Vegreville, Alan (B.V) : Could you present yourself and tell us how you got into product management?

Thomas Rolf, Alan (T.R): My name is Thomas. I started in product management about 12 years ago in, California. I got into Product Management out of luck, I actually started as a user researcher at LinkedIn. During a summer internship there, I discovered what product management is about, and thought that this looked exactly what I wanted to do.

B.V: What is your current role at Alan?

T.R: My current role is product lead. I have a few responsibilities: The first one is the management of the team of PMs, and the second one is our product strategy, so what do we build, when, to be on track for our vision.

B.V: What's a proud moment you experienced recently within the PM community?

T.R: As a community, we are really getting better at using artificial intelligence in our day to day job and also in our products, and I think that makes us much better product managers.

B.V: What's the challenge in your job that maybe people underestimate?

T.R: It's sometimes tough to allocate my time because there's, there are so many opportunities between, the product community, hiring, coaching some people and then the long term strategic topics, and client discussions. The biggest challenge is how to allocate my time and pick the right opportunities.

B.V: And do you have any tips on that?

T.R: The best tip on allocating your time is to be very mindful about it and set an appetite for each of your task, ahead of it.

B.V: What are the main values you try to foster in the PM community?

T.R: A core value at Alan for product managers is extreme ownership of their product: from where we want to be in a couple of years, the vision, to today and this exact feature and small trade off to make the product amazing for our members.

B.V: What what's your typical week? What do you spend your time on currently?

T.R: A typical week will usually be a couple hours on hiring, meeting great people, that we may want to bring on in the team. A few hours on coaching. And then quite a bit of time on our main strategic decisions at this point in time and anticipating what's coming next for the next quarter or next year.

Stay tuned for the next portrait!
