Pay transparency in Canada: from compliance to competitive advantage

Since early 2026, Ontario employers have to post a salary range. Almost 3 in 4 Canadian employees told us that isn't what they actually want.

We asked 449 employees and 298 HR leaders across Canada what pay transparency really means to them.

Inside: the data, a 5-step plan sized for a growing company, and ten years of running fully transparent pay at Alan.

What over 700 Canadians actually told us

Original Alan research from 2026. 449 employees and 298 HR professionals, representative of the Canadian workforce at a 95% confidence level.

78% want it. 36% have it.

Pay transparency is important or essential to 78% of Canadian employees, yet only 36% say the criteria behind their pay are written down and shared.

    The silence is the problem

61% have heard little or nothing about how pay is decided at their company, and 24% say it has never been explained at all.

HR fears conflict more than employees do

41% of Canadian HR leaders named internal conflict as their top fear, more than in any country we surveyed. Only 18% of employees thought transparency would mostly cause conflict.
